Cami Brownhill
My name is Cami Brownhill and my pronouns are she/her. I was born in York and I am a creator living in the UK. I graduated from Goldsmiths in 2024 with a BA in Fine Art, where I was one of the artists awarded The Warden’s Prize for my final degree show artwork.
Description of my main sculptural practice:
I work mainly in an autobiographical manner that acts as a narrative of living as a transwoman in the UK. The way I work relies heavily on my interpretation of automatism. My thoughts when creating usually revolve around my trauma and anger which gives my work this honesty with embedded pain that is juxtaposed by the beauty of my ceramic glazes. I started making abstract figurative faces as a way to make a physical entity for my emotions and to represent a memory. I moved to ceramics because I found it to be a very powerful sculptural medium and clay being an additive and subtractive material means I can constantly make heavy changes which is invaluable due to the way I work. I find the colours and blends I could achieve through glazing really add to my sculpture’s identity.
Description of my practice from a exhibition I was a part of with Farce Gallery:
Cami Brownhill (she/her)
Cami Brownhill works primarily in an autobiographical manner in a way which portrays a narrative of her lived experience as a trans woman in the UK. With a focus on ceramics, Cami’s works are largely inspired by an impulse to capture emotions with unflinching honesty; embedding her own trauma and anger between the layers of ceramic glaze. Cami’s affinity with ceramics lies in the nature of the medium being an additive and subtractive material, which allows her the fluidity to make many changes during the making process. Automatism forms an integral part of the way Cami works, with her abstracted figuration acting as a physical manifestation of emotion and memory. Cami graduated from Goldsmiths in 2024 with a BA in Fine Art, where she was a recipient of The Warden’s Prize for her degree show artwork.
